1/48 Darne Lewis Full Heatsinks
The Darne Lewis (Full Heatsinks) is a distinctive French‑manufactured variant of the Lewis light machine gun, produced under license by Société des Anciens Établissements Darne during World War I. This version is immediately recognizable by its fully finned aluminum barrel heatsink, extending the full length beneath the cooling shroud—an engineering feature that emphasizes sustained fire capability and thermal efficiency.
Chambered in .303 British, the Darne Lewis retained the classic Lewis operating system and top‑mounted pan magazine (typically 47 rounds), while showcasing French manufacturing refinements. The full heatsink configurationincreased surface area for heat dissipation, reinforcing the Lewis gun’s reputation for reliable air‑cooling during prolonged firing. This made it well suited for infantry and fixed defensive roles, as well as instructional and reserve use.
Darne‑produced Lewis guns were supplied to French and Allied forces, particularly during periods of high demand when domestic French designs could not meet frontline requirements. The combination of British design and French industrial execution makes this variant especially appealing to historians and collectors.
