1/48 Lewis RNAS Pattern

The Lewis Gun RNAS variant was a specialized adaptation of the famous Lewis light machine gun designed for use by the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) during World War I. Tailored for aerial operations, this configuration addressed the unique challenges of early air combat, including mounting constraints, airflow cooling, and synchronization with aircraft systems.

Chambered in .303 British, the RNAS Lewis retained the signature top-mounted pan magazine (47 or 97 rounds) but often featured a shortened or removed barrel cooling shroud to reduce weight and improve airflow when mounted on aircraft. Many RNAS guns were fitted with spade grips, drum sights, and flexible mounting brackets for observer or pilot operation, making them ideal for defensive and offensive roles on fighters, reconnaissance planes, and early bombers.

The RNAS Lewis gun was highly valued for its light weight, high rate of fire, and reliability under the rigors of aerial combat. Its ability to deliver sustained fire without overheating, combined with adaptability to fixed or flexible mounts, made it a mainstay of British naval aviation from 1915 through the end of the war.
