This piece celebrates the Albatros D.III  of Jasta 5 flown by Lt. Werner Voss, one of Germany's most famous fighter aces credited with 48 confirmed victories, until that morning of September 23rd, 1917, falling in a solo position against 8 British enemy aircraft.

This Albatros D.III, probably Voss's best known aircraft with its distinct Jasta 5 red nose, features a red heart on each side of the fuselage similar to a Valentine's Day candy box. Later, a third heart was painted on the top of the fuselage. This feat and that fateful September morning is captured in the artwork's abstract and minimalistic representation of falling hearts, symbolising that story and the emotional depth behind it. This one is a favourite of ours.
