1/32 Le Rhone 9J
The Le Rhone 9J is one of the most respected and widely used rotary aircraft engines of the First World War, renowned for its simplicity, reliability, and pilot-friendly handling. Developed in France by Société des Moteurs Le Rhône, the 9J became a benchmark for rotary engine design and a favorite among both pilots and mechanics.
This nine-cylinder, air-cooled rotary engine produced approximately 110 horsepower, offering smooth, dependable performance with fewer quirks than many contemporary rotaries. A defining feature of the 9J was its intake-through-the-crankcase design, which improved fuel distribution and contributed to more consistent running. Compared to engines like the Clerget, the Le Rhône was often praised for being easier to manage, especially for less experienced pilots.
The Le Rhone 9J powered a wide range of iconic aircraft, including the Nieuport 11, 17, and 28, Sopwith Pup, and numerous trainer and reconnaissance types. Its predictable throttle response and mechanical durability made it especially valuable during the rapid expansion of Allied air forces in 1916–1918.
