1/32 Lewis MK.II
The Lewis Gun Mk.II is an important evolutionary step in the development of one of World War I’s most iconic light machine guns. Introduced as an improvement over the Mk.I, the Mk.II incorporated refinements aimed at simplifying production, reducing weight, and improving handling, particularly for aerial and mobile roles.
Like its predecessor, the Mk.II was air‑cooled and fed from the distinctive top‑mounted pan magazine, most commonly holding 47 rounds. Chambered in .303 British, the Mk.II often dispensed with the full-length aluminum cooling shroud found on the Mk.I, especially on aircraft-configured examples, relying instead on direct airflow during flight. This change reduced weight and made the gun better suited for flexible mounts and synchronized or observer use.
The Lewis Mk.II saw service primarily with the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service, where its reliability, high rate of fire, and manageable recoil made it a preferred aircraft machine gun. Ground-use variants also existed, though the Mk.I remained more common with infantry units.
