1/48 Darne Lewis Half Heatsinks
The Darne Lewis (Half Heatsinks) is a less common French‑manufactured variant of the Lewis light machine gun, produced under license by Société des Anciens Établissements Darne during World War I. This configuration is distinguished by its partially finned aluminum barrel heatsink, which covers only part of the barrel beneath the cooling shroud—bridging the gap between the full‑heatsink infantry pattern and the more stripped aircraft types.
Chambered in .303 British, the Darne half‑heatsink Lewis retained the standard Lewis operating system and top‑mounted pan magazine (typically 47 rounds). By reducing the extent of the finned heatsink, weight was lowered while still preserving adequate heat dissipation for sustained ground fire. This made the variant well suited to mobile infantry use, secondary-line units, and mixed-role service, where portability and reliability were equally important.
The half‑heatsink configuration reflects wartime pragmatism, adapting a proven design to material availability, production speed, and evolving tactical needs. Darne’s high‑quality machining and finish remain evident, giving these guns a distinct identity within the broader Lewis family.
