1/72 Hotchkiss M1909
The Hotchkiss M1909, often known as the Benét–Mercié, is a pioneering light machine gun that marked an important transition from heavy, tripod‑mounted guns to more mobile automatic weapons. Developed by Hotchkiss et Cie of France and adopted by several nations - including the United States - the M1909 was designed to give infantry portable automatic firepower on the early 20th‑century battlefield.
Chambered most commonly in .30‑06 Springfield for U.S. service (with other calibers used internationally), the M1909 was fed by distinctive metal feed strips rather than belts or magazines. This system reduced weight and complexity but required careful handling, giving the gun a mixed reputation in the field. Air‑cooled and relatively lightweight for its time, the M1909 could be deployed rapidly and operated by a small crew.
The Hotchkiss M1909 saw service in the early years of World War I, particularly with the U.S. Army during the Punitive Expedition into Mexico and in limited WWI roles before being replaced by more robust designs. Despite its shortcomings, it provided valuable combat experience that directly influenced later and more successful Hotchkiss machine guns, such as the M1914.
