1/32 Le Rhone 9C
The Le Rhone 9C is a compact, dependable rotary aircraft engine that played a vital role in the early air war of World War I. Developed by Société des Moteurs Le Rhône, the 9C was designed to deliver reliable performance in a lightweight, mechanically simple package, ideal for early fighters, scouts, and trainers.
This nine-cylinder, air-cooled rotary engine produced approximately 80 horsepower, making it well suited to the lighter aircraft of 1914–1916. Like other Le Rhône designs, the 9C used an intake-through-the-crankcase system, which promoted even fuel distribution and smooth running while reducing mechanical complexity. Its forgiving nature and consistent operation made it popular with pilots and ground crews alike.
The Le Rhone 9C powered a variety of early war aircraft, including light Nieuport, Morane-Saulnier, and Sopwithtypes. While modest in power compared to later rotary engines, it was praised for its durability, ease of maintenance, and predictable handling, qualities that were crucial during aviation’s formative years.
